A Janm Kundali (birth chart) is a map of the positions of the planets at the exact moment and place of your birth. In Vedic astrology it is the foundation for every reading — career, marriage, health, gemstones and remedies.
What you need to make one
- Date of birth
- Exact time of birth — as accurate as possible
- Place of birth — the town or city
The time matters most. The ascendant (lagna) changes roughly every two hours, and the divisional charts change even faster, so a difference of a few minutes can change important conclusions.
The twelve houses
The chart is divided into twelve houses (bhavas), each ruling an area of life — self, wealth, siblings, home and mother, children and education, health and enemies, marriage and partnership, longevity, fortune and dharma, career, gains, and expenses and liberation.
Planets, signs and dashas
The nine grahas sit in the twelve signs and houses. Their strength, the aspects between them, and the Vimshottari dasha — the planetary periods you run through life — together describe the timing of events.
