In Vastu Shastra the main entrance is called the mouth of the house — the point through which energy, opportunity and people enter. Even small changes here are said to influence the whole home.
Direction
Entrances facing north, east or north-east are traditionally considered the most auspicious. That does not mean other directions are "bad" — Vastu divides each side into padas (segments), and a south- or west-facing home can have a well-placed door too. The exact pada matters more than the direction alone.
Simple tips for any entrance
- Keep the entrance clean, well lit and free of clutter, shoes and dustbins.
- The main door should be the largest door in the house and open inwards, smoothly and without creaking.
- Place a nameplate and an auspicious symbol such as Swastik, Om or a toran of fresh mango leaves.
- Avoid a mirror directly facing the main door.
- A threshold (dehleez) is traditionally recommended.
