Ruby, known in Hindi as Manik or Manikya, is the gemstone of the Sun (Surya). In Jyotish the Sun stands for the soul, self-confidence, leadership, the father and one's standing in society.
Who is it traditionally recommended for?
Ruby is generally considered for people whose chart shows a well-placed but weak Sun that is beneficial for their ascendant — for example, it is often discussed for Leo, Aries and Sagittarius ascendants. It is traditionally associated with:
- confidence and clarity in decision-making,
- recognition at work and in government-related matters,
- leadership roles and administrative careers.
For some ascendants the Sun rules difficult houses, and a ruby would not be advised. That is why the chart must be seen first.
What makes a good natural ruby
- Colour: a rich red, often called "pigeon's blood" at the finest end; pinkish or brownish tones are lower in value.
- Clarity: natural rubies usually have small inclusions — a stone that looks too perfect should be tested.
- Treatment: glass-filled or heavily treated rubies are common in the market. A lab report tells you what you are buying.
Traditional way of wearing
Ruby is traditionally set in gold or panchdhatu and worn on the ring finger of the right hand, on a Sunday morning after purification and chanting the Surya mantra. The exact weight and muhurat are advised after studying your horoscope.
Wear ruby only after an astrologer has confirmed that a stronger Sun is good for you.
