Kaalsarp Dosh (or Kaalsarp Yoga) is described when all seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — lie on one side of the axis formed by Rahu and Ketu. The name comes from the image of the planets being "held" between the serpent's head (Rahu) and tail (Ketu).
Why its effect varies
Traditionally twelve types of Kaalsarp are named, depending on the houses Rahu and Ketu occupy. Its effect depends on the rest of the chart: if the ascendant and important planets are strong, the yoga may show mainly as delays or extra effort rather than real hardship. It is also considered partial when a planet sits exactly with Rahu or Ketu, or outside the axis.
Common myths
- "It ruins the whole life." — Many successful people have this yoga; it describes struggle before stability, not permanent failure.
- "Every obstacle is because of Kaalsarp." — Dashas, transits and other yogas matter just as much.
Traditional remedies
- Kaalsarp Dosh Nivaran Puja — traditionally performed at places such as Ujjain and Trimbakeshwar.
- Regular worship of Lord Shiva, especially on Mondays, and offering water to the Shivling.
- Chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra and Rahu–Ketu mantras.
- Feeding and caring for others, especially on Saturdays.
