Many people pick a gemstone because they like its colour, because a friend wears it, or because a "birthstone" list says so. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish) none of these decide which stone is right for you. The only reliable guide is your Janm Kundali — the birth chart made from your date, time and place of birth.
The nine gems and their planets
The Navratna are the nine gemstones linked to the nine grahas:
- Ruby (Manik) — Sun (Surya)
- Pearl (Moti) — Moon (Chandra)
- Red Coral (Moonga) — Mars (Mangal)
- Emerald (Panna) — Mercury (Budh)
- Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj) — Jupiter (Guru)
- Diamond (Heera) — Venus (Shukra)
- Blue Sapphire (Neelam) — Saturn (Shani)
- Hessonite (Gomed) — Rahu
- Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) — Ketu
What the astrologer looks at
A gemstone strengthens the planet it represents. That is helpful only when the planet is a friendly, beneficial one for your ascendant (lagna) and is weak in your chart. Strengthening a planet that rules difficult houses can do more harm than good. So the Jyotishi studies:
- your lagna and the lords of the important houses,
- the strength and placement of each planet,
- the current Mahadasha and Antardasha you are running.
A stone that brings luck to one person can create obstacles for another. Always have your chart checked before wearing a Navratna.
Weight, quality and metal
Once the right gem is chosen, the weight (in ratti), the metal (gold, silver or panchdhatu), the finger and the day of wearing are advised for you personally. A natural, untreated stone with a lab testing report is essential — a treated or synthetic stone does not carry the same astrological value.
At Petwal Gems every stone is suggested only after Pt. Mukesh Petwal has studied your horoscope. Book a consultation to find the gemstone that truly suits you.
